Transfer a domain in
Move a domain you already own from another registrar to Plonki. Websites and email keep working: the domain keeps its nameservers.
Before you start
- Turn off the transfer lock at the current registrar (sometimes called "registrar lock").
- Get the transfer code (also called an EPP code or auth code). .au codes come from the current registrar too.
- Check the domain wasn't registered or transferred in the last 60 days. Registries don't allow moving it sooner.
- Make sure the owner's email at the current registrar works. Some registrars email the owner to approve.
1. Check it and get the price
shell
curl https://plonki.com.au/v1/transfers/check \
-H "Authorization: Bearer $PLONKI_KEY" -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{"domain": "acmecoffee.com", "auth_code": "Xy7#p2Lq9!"}'json
{ "domain": "acmecoffee.com", "transferable": true, "amount": 3399, "currency": "AUD", "adds_a_year": true,
"note": "The transfer adds a year to the registration." }2. Start the transfer
shell
curl https://plonki.com.au/v1/transfers \
-H "Authorization: Bearer $PLONKI_KEY" -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-H "Idempotency-Key: move-acmecoffee" \
-d '{"domain": "acmecoffee.com", "auth_code": "Xy7#p2Lq9!", "max_price": 3399}'The owner contact works as it does for registration: send contact the first time, or it uses your default contact.
3. Wait for it to finish
processing | The transfer is with the registries. Most finish within 1 to 7 days. Plonki checks on it every 10 minutes. |
completed | It's in your account. You get order.completed. |
failed | The old registrar or the owner refused it, or it timed out. The payment goes back to your balance and you get order.failed. |
Prices
- Generic domains (.com, .io, .net and so on): the transfer adds a year, and costs about the same as a renewal. See the Transfer in column on Prices.
- .au domains: the expiry date stays the same, so only a small transfer fee applies.
After it arrives
- The domain keeps its existing nameservers, so nothing changes for the website or email.
- To manage DNS in Plonki, set the nameservers to an empty list. Copy any records you need first.
- New transfers arrive locked. Turn the lock off with PUT /domains/{domain}/lock before moving it again.
With an assistant
Ask for it in plain words, e.g. "move acmecoffee.com to Plonki, the code is Xy7#p2Lq9!". The assistant uses check_transfer, confirms the price, then transfer_domain.
